"Kicks For Kids"

"Touching souls through soles with Kicks for Kids"

I started a program while I was deployed in Iraq called "Kicks for Kids". The one thing I noticed more than anything else is one small donation can make a world of difference. I asked that people send me shoes instead of care packages. I would distribute those shoes to the children I saw when I was out and about in Iraq. I was expecting ten to fifteen pair - and I got close to 15,000 pair from all over the world!!! That is a testament to the generous hearts of Americans, to help when there is a need. Although my deployment is over, the need doesn't stop. Please send any and all shoes, new and gently used, big and small, to Major Wade Carmichael, a civil affairs officer currently stationed in Iraq. You will truly make a world of difference in the quality of life for the children of Iraq. Thank you in advance....

What an amazing thing to do to help these kids. They really are the ones in Iraq who have no control over what is going on and they probably have zero stability in their lives. Thanks for what you are doing.

Hi, I'm a college student in DC, and I just saw you on Dennis Miller. You're a beautiful person, inside and out. Any contribution to this world, big or small, is important, and I just wanted to say thanks.

Hello,
I just saw you on Dennis Miller and was extremely impressed! Thanks first of all for your service to our country and for putting the story over there in perspective for all of us. I think you are also doing a terrific thing and I will send you some shoes for your cause! I'm very proud of you and what you have accomplished.

Thank you very much!

Thank you Addie for providing a service to help the kids in Iraq and those here at home who don't know what to do with shoes they no longer use! We will send Major Stephen Stewart a BIG box. God Bless!

Addie, As always I was glad to see you express your feelings for the children's needs in Iraq on Dennis Miller. They are caught up in something they don't deserve to be in, and you use your media position to tell of their lives. THis shows the world you saw while you were over there. You have given so much of yourself and you continue doing it today. I am glad to know you and respect your contributions to Our Country. Thanks for delivering the truth and God Bless You.

Kicks for kids sounds great and I will try to gather and send some. For others, it might be easier to make a cash contribution to support the cause. I know this complicates things beyond your intent, but maybe something could be worked out on a discount basis with a retailer, manufacturer, etc. I would contribute. Good for you, and God bless.

Nice job on Dennis Miller, Addie. You made your points well and I'm sure you'll find the volume of contributions to the children of Iraq will increase substantially as a result of your charitable efforts.

To Hakim Singhji: nice job of introducing a partisan leftist comment in a blog that didn't have any of your biased, partisan views until you spouted off. Nobody cares what your views on Iraq or Addie's efforts are.

Thanks for being an inspiration, and for laughing all the time with me, you are crazy funny girl!

I believe in what you are doing as well. Along with everyone else, I saw you on D.M last night (to which my recently-returned-from-Iraq Marine buddies commented on your looks) but I have to say it was a good thing to do. I have also read your posts through October and enjoy reading it. Coming from a Marine family, I have a lot of loved ones who are Marines and I see pictures of what they see. I was surprised how many people in the pictures had no shoes at all and saddened me since the country has a great opportunity for success and it has obviously been denied from the people or Iraq. I hope this gets them off to a good start.
I wish you the best of luck in your efforts (and the Army's efforts now). Did I hear you mention something about adult shoes and/or stylish shoes for young women?

Hi Addie, like others, I was watching Dennis Miller and heard about the tangible initiative you've pioneered on behalf of these shoeless war kids. I'm part of a non-profit in Chicago working with children's charities and plan to offer it up to our beneficiary charities as a way to have the local kids here connect to, and become aware of the world at large. If we can develop a selfless attitude within disadvantaged Chicago kids by helping them see true devastation abroad, maybe it will empower these kids with perspective and help them along their personal growth. Wishing you continued good karma and success in your endeavors.

Addie, unfortunately, I did not get to see you on the Dennis Miller show. I did read all of your letters, and am extremely impressed with your honesty and sincerity. Perhaps we should not be there, but we are. Thank god for soldiers like yourself who are going to be sure that we finish this right and earn the respect of the Iraqi people and the watching world. Sgt. Addie: I'm a retired Navy PAO; saw you on Dennis Miller last night and was most impressed with your story. Bravo Zulu to you! Once I retired, had to find another way to serve, so I returned to public education. Will send info about your site and Kicks for Kids to our entire faculty, especially those teachers who sponsor service clubs. BTW, are you a DINFOS grad? I feel silly asking this question, but is it possible to send along gently worn shoes. I live in a low-income area and some of the people here want to send basically the 'shoes' off their feet. You never mentioned if the shoes could have been worn.

Sorry to sound so silly.

Thanks in advance for what you're doing.

Hello,

My dad is at camp TQ right now. We have been sending him shoes as well since January. I think there is another big distribution set for June 15th or so. I am not sure if he was a part of your 'kicks for kids' campaign, but it is an awesome service to thier country.

Just saw you on the Early Show. I'll be sending all my kids outgrown shoes! Thanks for reminding us that no matter what the politics of adults may be, ALL CHILDREN need food, clothes, shelter, toys, books, etc...

Great idea - thanks for a noble effort!

Hello Sgt. Collins:

I would like to begin by commending you for the wonderful idea that you have come up with to help the children of Iraq. I have had several close friends who have been involved in the efforts in Iraq. My husband owns a company that does overhaul construction on grounds support vehicles for the many areas of Department of Defense so we are also quite involved in the war efforts.

My name is Andrea. I am from Bordentown, New Jersey. I teach first grade here in my hometown. We are located about 10 minutes from McGuire Air force Base and Fort Dix. At school, we often talk to the children about the war because we feel it is important and also due to having many military families.

When I saw your story on the Early Show I was taken back by your efforts. I immediately wanted to take part and thought that it was a great opportunity for the children at my school to be involved with. In the spring I had the my students make cards for the injured soldiers. They felt so good about what they were doing. It made them feel like they were helping out and making a difference.

I recently contacted the principal of my school to get permission to head up a "Kicks for Kids" in our school. He gave me the okay and I am very enthusiastic about collecting shoes when school goes back in to help the children of Iraq.

I strongly believe that this program would also demonstrate to students how to be a good citizen and how easily, as well as important, it is to help out others.

I hope other schools get involved also~~

Thanks again for your help and dedication to this program!

My son has had one tour in Iraq and who knows when he'll go back. Great program you have organized. When he was over there, we sent children's clothes for him to give out. The Iraq people were so friendly with him and appreciated the clothes so much. Got some of my grandkid's outgrown shoes. Now I know where to send them. Again, thanks for spearheading this program.
